What is a Colon Hydrotherapy?
A Colon Hydrotherapy, also known as colon therapy, colonic or colonic irrigation is a process of cleansing the Colon (lower intestinal tract) and detoxifying the overall system by allowing a continuous flow of warm filtered water into the colon, gently removing waste matter. A colonic session is one of the most powerful and effective ways of cleansing and detoxifying the system. It can stimulate the body into moving accumulated toxins from different areas in the body and activate the elimination process.
What are the benefits of Colon Hydrotherapy?
Colon Hydrotherapy or Colonics is one of the quickest forms of detoxification, moving accumulated toxins out of the system within approximately 35-40 minutes. Colonics can stimulate the cleansing of the blood, the liver, and the lymphatic systems, making it easier for other organs to release their waste products. Colon Hydrotherapy also improves the processing and the delivery of nutrients by stimulating the upper digestive tract. Colonics also are known to stimulate the removal of toxins from brain and the nervous system.
How is a Colonic session performed?
At Atlant Health Wellness Center, the session begins with the client lying on the left side for the insertion of a disposable speculum that allows water to flow into the colon and waste matter to pass out simultaneously. This process is so gentle that most clients are not even aware when the session begins. During the session the Colon Therapist will gently massage the abdomen to improve peristalsis and comfort level, while the waste moves out of the colon through a closed tube.
How long is the Colonic session?
A colonic session is approximately 40-45 minutes, which has been proven to be the length of time needed to produce optimum elimination for a given session. The session consists of 12-15 gallons of water gently moving in and out of the colon. In some instances, a colonic session may be longer or shorter as the need arises. The client however has the option of ending the session at any point that he or she chooses.

Colonics should never be painful. Depending on an individual’s toxicity or state of mind, the treatment may be easy or more challenging. If there is a gas blockage or extreme constipation, there may be some slight discomfort just before a release. The colon hydro-therapist will use techniques to massage and manipulation to avoid any discomfort. Colonic Hydrotherapy is a safe method of detoxification. Purified water gently introduced into the colon at a mild rate of pressure. Our trained therapists perform sessions and closely monitor for any discomfort you may have during the session.
Should Colonics be done during fasting or restricted dieting?
When you do colonics during fasting period, your body now has an opportunity to retrieve stored extra toxins and expel them from the system. Due to the lack of food intake, as in a fasting or cleansing program, the peristaltic action of the digestive system is decreased, and elimination will be drastically reduced. It is very important that the elimination process continues in conjunction with the fast to support the body’s cleansing effort. A series of colonic treatments will improve the effectiveness of the “cleansing” and provide the necessary medium for the rapid elimination of waste from the system. It is recommended that colonics should be done one or two times per week during fasting.
What are the contraindications of colonics?
Colon Hydrotherapy sessions should not be attempted within the first six to eight weeks after any major surgery. In addition, if the operated area is still tender after six to eight weeks, you should wait until it is totally healed before doing a session. If the person is very weak and unable to walk alone or there are multiple complications involving heart trouble, high blood pressure, colon hydrotherapy should not be attempted. In all of the above situations, it is best for these individuals to start with a series of enemas and a healthy dietary regiment before attempting colon hydrotherapy.
Can pregnant women get Colonics?
A pregnant woman can receive colonic irrigations up until the 8th month of her term, provided that she has been having colonics prior to pregnancy and has no significant contraindications. Colonics are a big help in times of pregnancy and can help both the mother and her unborn baby. The mother should consume a healthier diet and include raw vegetable juices, salads, fruits, and vegetable juices as much as possible.
Does having a Colonic harm the intestinal flora?
Other than the flora that passes out of the colon through a bowel movement, a colonic irrigation does not have any significant effect on the intestinal flora. To the contrary, it’s among the most beneficial procedures since it purges out old waste matter and impacted particles from the walls of your colon that reduce flourishing of intestinal flora. Additionally, there are glands situated deep within the walls of the ascending intestine, on the right side of one’s body, which promote flora into the gut. Therefore, removing flora from your gut is like removing saliva from your mouth, it’s easy to replace and can’t be permanently removed.
What is the difference between an Enema and a Colonic?
Enemas will not clean the entire length of the colon. An enema involves a one-time infusion of water. This water sits in the lower part of the colon for a period of time and then the person sits on the toilet to release the water. Enemas do not have to be administered by a professional, however a certified therapist, using a specially designed machine or gravity water tank, administers colon hydrotherapy. With colon hydrotherapy fecal matter leaves the body through a tube that goes directly into the sewage system. There is no odor. The amount of water used for an enema (typically 1.5 or 2 quarts) is not enough for a thorough cleansing of the colon. The water pressure needed to move the water up into the colon can’t be achieved using an enema bag. During a colonic session, a therapist may use anywhere from 12 to 15 gallons of water. The gradual in-flow of water travels six feet in length and activates cleansing from the sigmoid to the ascending colon and cecum. Enemas are no match for this level of in terms of cleansing. Actually, the effects of one good colonic are equivalent to 12 to 15 enemas. Furthermore, any impaction in the upper 1/2 of the colon (ascending to mid transverse) does not respond well to even continuous enemas. A part of colonic cleansing involves massage of the abdomen by a therapist, helps break up impaction in the colon. You can be sure that more than 2 quarts of water are required to complete the task of eliminating this waste.
How many Colonics do I need?
There is no quick or straightforward way to remove years of accumulated waste from the colon. Most individuals who visit a colon hydrotherapy center, have long-term cases of health issues and or dietary abuses that require professional attention. Overprescribing of antibiotics, use over the counter drugs, the unavoidable consumption of pesticides and herbicides, food preservatives and additives, processed foods and sugar, weaken the body’s defense mechanisms and seriously overwhelms its reserves. Due to these circumstances, it is rare to find someone who would not benefit from one or more series of 10-15 colonics.
At Atlant Health Wellness Center we suggest an initial series of 3 sessions spaced 4 days apart. For a series of 5 or more, the initial 3 are done similarly and the rest can be spaced 1 – 2 colonics per week based on the colon therapist’s assessment of each session. For special health situations, we may suggest that the colonics be kept up at specific intervals until the health condition has shown significant improvement and kept under control. It can’t be emphasized enough that a series of 3 sessions is the minimum number of sessions needed and does not effectively address long standing or deeply stored toxins or impaction in the colon and system. In order to get long standing or permanent results a series up to 15 or more sessions is required.
A series of colonics will be extremely beneficial to those suffering from chronic headaches, fatigue, constipation, digestive disorders, skin problems and stress and will be supportive in a whole host of other health issues. It increases the flow of energy in the system and is a very effective medium for the healing and rejuvenation process.

If I have frequent bowel movements, do I still need Colonics?
If you have had fatty, oily, fried, or denatured foods, alcohol or drug abuse, a consumption of dairy products or other mucous-producing foods, chances are the walls of your colon are impacted. If you come to experience skin problems like rashes or other forms of skin conditions, problems with the musculoskeletal system or any kind of health issue, your skin is giving you warning signals of toxicity. Even if you have three bowel movements each day, it does not negate the fact after years of dietary indiscretion, a gradual build-up of mucous and undigested foods can begin to accumulate in the lining of the colon. A series of colonics not only would remedy this situation, but also the toxic buildup throughout the entire system.
