History Of Colonics
Did you know that colon cleansing has been practiced for more than three thousand years? The “Ebers Papyrus”, an ancient Egyptian medical document, dated back in 1500 B.C., described many benefits of colon cleansing. In ancient times, the practice of colon cleansing was done in a river by using a hollow reed to encourage water flaw into the rectum. Hippocrates Pare and Galen advanced the use of enema therapy.
Over time, the benefits of colon irrigation continued to prevail with more people performing this procedure. Colon cleansing was frequently used among European populations to assist with maintenance and promotion of overall health. Enemas were considered essential to well-being. Colon cleansing was often used for reduction of fever, anxiety and prevent disease.
In the 1600s, colon cleansing was so popular, that almost every household was performing it. Based on the symptoms, many people did 3 to 4 enemas per day. Enemas were considered essential to well-being. At that time, even medical doctors recommended routine colon cleanse. An abnormally functioning colon may be a precursor to illness, and proper elimination is a natural way to maintain and restore health.
In the 1800s, Austrian Vincenz Priessnitz developed the first hydropathic institution in the world. His regime included water treatments in the mountain streams, as well as a diet consisting of black bread, fresh vegetables, and unpasteurized milk. Before the expedition of Lewis and Clarke, a physician encouraged them to use enemas for fever and illness. In the 1800s, enemas were a widely accepted procedure for reversing the onset of illness.
Current Colon Hydrotherapy Development
In the early 1900’s, medical doctor John H. Kellogg comprehensively used colon hydrotherapy on 40,000 patients. In a 1917 edition of the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) he reported that in all but 20 cases he used no surgery for the treatment of gastrointestinal disease in his patients. Dr. Kellogg ran the Adventist Battle Creek Sanitarium and suggested that 90% of disease results from the improper functioning of the colon. Most of his patients benefited from cleansing the bowels, diet and exercise
More recently, improvements in colon hydrotherapy devices allowed for a more complete cleansing of the large intestine. Implementation of these technological advancements brought on times of colonic popularity and also times of rejection. Unfortunately, advanced colon irrigation was, at times, administered by the unskilled and poorly trained personnel. This proved to be detrimental for the support of the general population and medical profession.
Despite the difficulties in the early 1900’s, the value of colon hydrotherapy continued to be recognized by several medical doctors. Most noteworthy were James A. Wiltsie M.D., Joseph Waddington M.D., and John H. Kellogg M.D.
Dr. Waddington stated in his work “Scientific Intestinal Irrigation and Adjuvant Therapy”, the following: “Abnormal functioning of the intestinal canal is the precursor of much ill-health, especially of chronic disease. Restoration of physiological intestinal elimination is often the important preliminary to eventual restoration of health in general”.
Dr. Wiltsie indicated “our knowledge of the normal and abnormal physiology of the colon and its pathology and management has not kept pace with that of many organ systems of the body. As long as we continue to assume the colon will take care of itself, it’s just that long that we will remain in complete ignorance of perhaps the most important source of ill health in the whole body”.
Since this time, colon hydrotherapy equipment and methods of practice have improved even further. Therapist training is now standardized through accrediting associations and colonic equipment boasts greater effectiveness along with the added security of regulation from the FDA.
In the last two decades, there has been a revival of interest in alternative medicine and natural health remedies. People are rediscovering the benefits of this natural, safe and convenient method to cleanse the colon and promote wellness. This return to colon hydrotherapy has been bolstered by the development of sophisticated colon hydrotherapy techniques, which make these therapies both safe and convenient.
Discover some benefits of Colonic Hydrotherapy:

The beauty of colonics is that it is a natural remedy, using only water. Colon hydrotherapy is the administration of warm, filtered and temperature-regulated water into the colon either through Gravity or Machine method. Fecal matter is softened and loosened, resulting in the evacuation through natural peristalsis. The procedure is repeated several times during an individual session.
At Atlant Health Wellness Center, we offer two types of colon hydrotherapy – Gravity and Machine. For more information about these two methods, please read this blog post (LINK)
